Lehman 4D61 = Volvo MD21 Parts Swapping

Post by rnummi »

Just some posts I dug up while surfing on a rainy day.... Enjoy.

The MB21A and MD21B use the Indenor XDP4/90 base engine.
Indenor stands for 'Industrie du Nord Est' which later became part of Peugeot.
The engine was to be found in Peugeot 504s, Citroen J7 vans, Opel Blitzs, Ford (UK) Granadas and a few others besides. It is still (or at least was last time I checked) used in the Mahindra Jeep from India where it is still in production.

In addition to the Volvo Penta marinisation the same base engine was used by Vetus (Netherlands) in their P4-21 and by Lehman as the 4D61. Also lots can be found in the Netherlands just branded 'Indenor bootsmotor' and painted bright red.

Only Volvo to my knowledge went to the lengths of replacing the standard timing chain with timing gears though.

My own is 30 years old and still going strong.
The circulation pump is showing first signs of a problem but there's a company in the UK that will rebuild it for a reasonable price.

I've learned a fair bit about these engines so any questions just ask.

The XDP4/90 or XDP4.90 derivation is well known here in the UK as I guess it was a much more common engine in its automotive form in Europe. For maintaining the non-Volvo bits I use the Peugeot 504 2.1D workshop manual published by Haynes and can confirm the 2112cc base engine is identical.

They were said to be 'good for 300,000 miles in taxis' so the only real problem should be maintaining the salty bits.

As to parts sources, it's always a challenge..
- there is a regular supply of head/sump/rocker cover gaskets, bearing shells, piston rings, glowplugs and even the occasional set of pistons and liners on Ebay. An inclusive search on 'XDP4/90' or '2112cc' will bring up a good few pages to browse through.

- Marinepartseurope is great for exploded diagrams and lists of which parts are still supposed to be available, at a price.
Volvo Penta MD21B, AQD21B - MarinePartsEurope.com

- raw water pumps are available new from a few sources e.g. Marine Products - Raw Water Circulation Pumps for Volvo Penta Boat Engines item JOH10-32058-1

- circulation pumps can be rebuilt by SP Water Pumps at SP Water Pumps - Marine engine water pumps for all makes and models They will also supply a new one for c. £400.

reference volvo md21 spares .sorry about delay.

parts are available from indenor retro Indenor Retro - Wellcome
not cheap but nor are volvo.

had ours 33 years i just had to rebuild it last year

The next time you look at the sea water pump, look and see if it has a tachometer sender coming out of the port side of the water pump. It looks like a small cylinder with a diameter similar to a half dollar. That will have a wire coming out from it and running aft. I believe the old type of water pump is the type with the tachometer sender.

Everything should be interchangeable between the two engines except the sea water pumps, and the heat exchanger. Not only are the sea water pumps different, they mount to the sea water pump drive differently. This is my problem at the moment. I am trying to find an obsolete md21b sea water pump anchorage.

If your engine is running good, don't do anything! Ha! I wish I had never had any inclination to repair the water pump. I could have gotten a trip or two in this summer, but instead I got nuttin'. I have faith though. I'll get this sorted out and report in on the good news. Let me know if any of this helped.

Picture description : That cylinder is the tachometer sender attached to the water pump.

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

I found many parts from these shops when i was rebuilding my indenor engine, and they were much cheaper than those parts in the marinepartseurope.

504 peugeot had the same indenor engine so its glowplugs, sealings and other stuff i had to order from there fitted perfectly.

Hello, The Volvo Penta 21 is an Indenor Diesel with heritage from around 1965, initially installed in the Peugeot 404. Indenor was a specialist engine company that was part of the Peugeot group. The engine developed and grew from it's initial 1816cc to 1948cc, then 2112cc through to it's final 2304cc as used in the Ford Sierra/Granada with some Block changes as it went.

The 1,816cc (XD 4/85 as 85mm was the bore size) and 1948cc (XDP 4/88 with 88mm Bore size) engine found it's way into the Citroen H van (replacing a 4 cylinder Perkins) and Peugeot 404 and 504.

These were also used extensively in Tractors.

Later versions were the XDP 4/90 (2,112cc) which was used in the Peugeot 504 and then later the 505/605 plus Marinised for the Volvo Penta 21.

If you go to parts of South Africa you will still find old 504/505 saloons being used as Taxis' with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock.

See our web page for more info on how to get the best from the Indenor engine which we specialise in rebuilding : Atlantic Motorhome : Citroen H van Rebuilt Indenor Diesel Engines

hello all!

I realize this is an old post, but… I am currently at Forest anchor, quite a ways from home with a bad circulation pump. The pump that circulates the glycol and is driven by the belt.

Anybody have any help for me, source of parts, etc.?

Thanks so much,

Touch wood, my 1984 4D61 with a mere 1900 hours on it is still the strongest diesel in town. All I've replaced have been hoses and belts (keep the NAPA Numbers on them), the fuel pump, plated off and replaced with a Chinese electric pump), engine mounts (really, REALLY needed doing), all the usual filters and oils and lubes etc. I had to get the Hurth gearbox rebuilt and a new plate made, and that's been trouble free for 7 years. The exhaust manifold went nuts a couple of years ago, but a new-to-me elbow and galv. pipe (which I MUST replace with SS) has sufficed for years. The Ultraflex Throttle/FNR control which I recently replaced, with new Teleflex control cables, make Mazboot seem like a young boat, and for now all is well in the ER. Also, my toolbox and workshop are now doubled in size and I'm a happy camper.

My advice would be to remove the pump with the help of a reliable mechanic and see if you can rebuild it. Failing that, ask said mechanic if he can replace it or scour eBay and Google for replacements. FYI, my Ultraflex came from Italy via DHL.
