Raw Water Flush

Post by Bobko »

I would like to flush my raw water system heat ex-changers etc. Looking for setup tips and precautions and maybe some pictures. Any guidance would be appreciated. 6LY-STE 420 hp Yanmar

I did this a few years ago on my 6lp. Fairly straightforward. 5gal bucket, utility pump or bilge pump, hoses, and whatever hose barb adapters you need. First, remove all zincs and reinstall the bronze plugs. Then I connected my pump system to the hose just after the raw water pump and exited from the hose right before the exhaust elbow and routed back to the bucket. I circulated barnacle buster in one direction for 2 hrs, then reversed the direction for another 2 hours. After that I flushed with fresh water for about 20 min. Reconnect the hoses and install new zincs. That’s it.

Also, out of an abundance of caution, I made sure to exit before the raw water hose connection that feeds the Tides shaft seal.

I concur with Greg. I did something similar, but not as thorough. Great summary of the right way!
