Trim Tabs

Post by DavidH »

Hello all. I have a 2005 35CB and although the trim tabs seem to operate, there is no reaction from the boat at all. The bow does not rise and fall, you cannot make the boat lean what so ever. The boat is always running level, but I would like to trim it for more speed and better fuel consumption.
The boat is fairly new to me, I bought it last fall. My boatyard seems to think that the trim tabs are too small. Could anyone else with a Command bridge tell me how there boat reacts to trimming the trim tabs? Thank you Dave.

Plenty of movement from my Bennetts. What size are yours?

I''m not sure of the size. I would have to wait until the boat is pulled this winter. I do know that they tuck up into their own cavity.

In my opinion, if the boat has no attitude reaction to inputs to either both or one of the trim tab controls, then there is only 2 conditions to cause a "non-reaction" of the boat while underway.

#1- electrical connection to the (Bennett) trim pump is faulty. Those connections do corode over time. OR...
#2- the pump itself is faulty and not making enough pressure to move the tabs, WHILE UNDERWAY. If you can see them move at the dock doesn't mean they are moving with the rather extreme water pressure while the boat is moving. This, I believe is the more likely explanation. Check the hydraulic fluid level in the pump reservoir. Look for fluid leaks.

Next the pump solenoids (I think) are replaceable. There are instructions for this online. Search for Bennett Pump servicing. If you don't want to mess with rebuilding the pump, I don't think a new (or rebuilt) pump is that fabulously expensive. Pay careful attention to the wiring which controls up/down, left/right. AND...hahaha, be prepared for some "boat yoga".

I think the trim tabs for the 32+2 and 35 CBs are the same size as they go into a molded area in the hull.

My boat responds noticeably to the trim tabs. A couple of seconds on the trim tab button makes a visible change to running attitude.

So I would ignore the yard's suggestion that the tabs are too small and focus on Barry's suggestions since yours clearly aren't working.
