AutoPilot suggestions for an Albin 35 Command Bridge

Post by HoovenDrifter »

Hello,

New t this forum and would love to ask the group about experiences with Autopilots in Albins. I have just purchased an Albin 35 Command Bridge and am researching Autopilot options.
Thank You,

Congratulations on your new boat and welcome aboard!

We've owned our 35CB for three years. It came with Raymarine instruments including ST-7002 autopilot. All I can tell you is that it works well. It's not particularly new. The installation has a lot of interconnected components. I only use it to hold a straight course, not to navigate anything tricky.

I recently installed (myself) a Simrad unit on my 31' TE. I am very happy with it and it interacts flawlessly with my otherwise Furuno suite. I am using the networked Furuno satellite compass, but the Simrad set does include a separate GPS heading sensor. Besides the computer and dash mounted control unit, included is a rudder angle feed back unit. I used an appropriately sized Simrad pump. Now if I can do this, I am pretty certain that you (or anybody) could as well. The only drawback between mixing brands is the need to use the Simrad control unit at all times, and not being able to use my Furuno MFD for directly controlling the AP. My knowledgeable electronics source installed the Furuno system several years ago, and at the time recommended the Simrad AP over the comparable Furuno offering available at the time. I have steadily added to the network and have to say the Simrad AP is really nice. I have no problem getting the Simrad AP to follow navigation routes from the Furuno MFD. Only after having the AP did I appreciate how fatiguing a log run with constant manual steering actually was. Garmin is also top notch stuff, but I'm skeptical of their long-term tech support. I have had numerous (10+) non-marine Garmin products and will now do all that I can to avoid the brand based upon numerous customer experiences I have had.
