New question for all about LiFePro4 Lithium Batteries

Post by Maogwaicat »

Hello All;

My two lead acid 8D house batteries are not doing the job anymore and I am now wanting to upgrade to Lithium LiFePro4. I have a couple questions;
1. Has anyone on this site transitioned to these special batteries? I would like to hear about lessons learned!

2. Are there special requirements or unique alternator required to charge these batteries?

I might just replace current batteries with same for now, but the price point for the modern technology seems to be dropping to affordable levels.

Thanks for any responses!

DC
UPDATE: I just found some relevant comments from a few months back that were responses to a previous post I made about my generator being inoperative. I will pay better attention... If there are any other bits of advice on this issue, I am ready to learn. Thanks again...!

Generally Li batteries are not starting batteries, so you would need 2 different systems, one for starting and one for house. Also they don't charge the same. So you would need a DC-DC charger. They do have there advantages and the prices have come down to be a consideration.

Forgive my heresy, but go to Trawler Forum for a boatload of information. You’ll get all kinds of conflicting info that you’ll need to sort through.

For a very good start also check out MarineHowTo. Rod Collins is a priceless resource.

(I’m still a huge fan of AOG. It’s how I got started, practically from scratch lo those many years ago.)

Hi There...
Check out this website. Very informative. "https://marinehowto.com/easy-lifepo4-conversion/" . Also PYS, Pacific Yacht Systems is very knowledgeable.
It seems that charging LiFePo batts off the engine alternator, will kill your alternator! There are relatively simple means to protect your alternator.
