Proper Coolant
Use any of the Dex-cool, extended life coolants that contain no phosphates or silicates which is stated on the label. When I had my 6LP I changed the coolant every other year. A lot cheaper than an aluminum exhaust manifold!
Concentrated mixed 50/50 with distilled water is the most cost effective way to go.

Re: Varying Engine RPM
While inspecting and servicing the filters, check the fuel lines for cracks and tears as well. Dont forget to tighten the clamps! The symptoms could also be air entering the system.
