This is our first year with our new (to us) 2002 Albin 31 TE (Love it!). We currently have a transom mounted StructureScan transducer. We are planning a full electronics upgrade this winter. Does any one have any advice related to the transducers I'm considering, things I should pay extra attention to, or any other helpful reccommendations? Our boatyard will do the thru-hull transducer installation (3). I will be installing the MFD,radar and making all of the final connections.
Equipment:
  • Simrad NSS12 evo3s (already own it)
  • Halo 20+
Transducers:
  • 1@ XSONIC Airmar B175HW
  • 2@ StructureScan 3D
  • 1@ StructureScan 3D Module
I'm comfortable with the electrical, but not with placement or cutting into my hull!

Make sure that they realize that this is a cored boat. This means that special precaution must be taken when installing the through hull transducers. The proper way to do it is to overdrill the hole and fiberglass it. Then re-drill the correct hole size. This will ensure that the core will remain water free

That is a great point…that I would have “assumed” they would know/do. We know where assuming gets us!! Do you have any particular thoughts on the transducers themselves? I’m in Maine and don’t do any structure fishing off the bottom deeper than 350’. Most of my fishing is for stripers around islands & rips and tuna offshore.

The B175HW is very popular in the PNW trolling for salmon. It is good for differentiating fish and covering a lot of area with the wide beam. Probably not the best choice for bottom structure.
