Missing Skeg on A27
I am looking at a 27FC that doesn’t have a skeg. Based on the photo it looks like there never was one or someone did a good job of covering it up. Is this unusual or a problem?

Re: Missing Skeg on A27
From what I understand, the earlier 27FCs were that way from the factory. They added the skeg (or shoe?) to later model years.
Mine had the skeg. It was really just a 2x4 or 2x6, pressure treated if I recall (may not have been original, but worked out fine). Someone here has (had?) a version like yours.
Only downside I can think of if you ran over a rope it would catch on the rudder. In the real world? I've owned dozens of boats and have yet to run over a line.
Probably just jinxed myself!

Re: Missing Skeg on A27
Mazboot has no shoe, and after 4 years on the mid-Chesapeake Bay i've never had a problem negotiating the marked and unmarked crab pots. Of course, now I've moved upriver to DC I'm sure to hit a submerged tree or something similar.
However, shoe or no shoe I can say that I've never had a problem with being shoe-less.

Re: Missing Skeg on A27
Thank you both for the info. I was a little concerned since I hadn’t seen one without a shoe. Based on your input I will give this boat a closer look.

Just looking at Smacksman video of his ICW trip. No skeg on his A27 either.
