Windlass- Opinions? Which One?

Post by Jkraft »

Hi all, my 2002 28 TE has the original Simson Lawrence 600 Horizontal Windlass. It deploys fine but seems to hang up when coming up. It is acting like its got a power supply issue but its getting the proper voltage. I talked to my electronics guy and he thinks its time to replace. I would like to go with another horizontal unit. Is a lewmar the best option for this boat?

Thank you,

I like this one, https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=1599799
but never use the Free Fall option.

Before you give up on the windlass check the solenoid switch. The contacts suffer wear and oxidation over time which results in voltage loss across the contacts. Usually a clean up with emery paper restores performance. It's also cheaper to replace the solenoid switch than the windlass.

Are you measuring the voltage at the windlass at rest and when powered to check for a voltage drop ?
Just because you may have battery voltage at the windlass when at rest does not mean it is still getting the needed voltage when it draws current. (same concept as load testing a battery)

Thanks, any idea where that is?

The solenoid switch is most likely mounted in the rode lockerand mounted up against the deck or the rear bulkhead up high. That's where
it was in my 28 and again in my 31. Cleaning it up and spraying with CorrosionX should be annual maintenance. It's one of those upside down jobs! Hopefully this will solve your issue.

Pitou pretty much described the typical location. The solenoid is mounted under deck as close as possible to the windlass. Most manufacturers provide instruction on their web sites for servicing the solenoid switch. Google "Simpson Lawrence 600 Horizontal Windlass solenoid repair" and you will probably get directions.

Good news, I found that the ground wire on my batteries was loose due to a failed/ stripped out battery lug. Seems to be working great now. Will test this weekend

So tell me why not use the free fall option? I have a Quick Windlass and it takes forever to deploy. Which really sucks in tight quarters when you are trying to anchor in a crowded area.
Thanks

I got the Lewmar 700 Pro Fish.
Don’t like the free fall option, anchor and chain goes out too fast, almost out of control.
The free fall thingy can be turned off and it reverts back to a regular power down and power up windlass.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to see if it will fit where my old one is. If I don't have to do to much cosmetic work I think I'll try it. I like the option it has both freefall and standard.

anyone tried the E-Z Anchor Puller ? Not the prettiest but I like the idea of a drum style unit, not sure if it can be done but would love to fit it below deck
